A new article argues that the real scandal with college affordability isn’t student loan interest rates, but the ever-increasing costs that have little to do with the core competency of learning (such as mega gyms, performing arts centers, dining halls with sushi chefs).

In a rare moment of bipartisanship, US Senators and Representatives are uniting to help curb tuition by proposing a series of measures to make colleges more transparent. These measures include requiring colleges to standardize financial aid letters and disclose how much debt their average students will incur, as well as chart expected job placement statistics and earnings post- graduation. Ironically, higher education institutions have spent millions of dollars lobbying against these efforts claiming that job placement, earnings, and debt statistics do not portray the value of their overall education. What’s your opinion? Should Congress work to move forward with these bi-partisan proposals? LIKE = YES & COMMENT = NO

Should Science and Engineering majors pay less than History and English majors? The Florida Governor is looking to tie tuition rates to degrees that are in demand (in the job market). If the plan goes into effect, some four year degrees could cost as little at $10,000. What’s your opinion?

Many schools get into the habit of raising college tuition each year, only to give more in financial aid for students to afford their education. Belmont Abbey College President, William Thierfelder, stopped the cycle and cut tuition from $27,600 to $18,500 without any effects to class size.

Tuition rates have gone up dramatically during the past three decades. One of the major reasons for this has been the withdrawal of state and local funding. Education should be a priority, not a privilege… LIKE this if you agree, and tell us your student loan stories.

The cost of college is outpacing the cost of living.
Student loan debt has exceeded 1 trillion dollars, and the average graduate now possesses more than $25,000 in debt.
College tuition at public universities rose 8% this year.
President Obama has said that he will reward colleges who keep their tuition down with more federal funding, and cut back on funding from colleges that keep becoming more expensive.
Each year, more young Americans are going broke from their education. We have been taught that we need a college education in order to increase our life-long earnings and prospects for a good career. Yet if colleges keep becoming more expensive and we have to take out additional loans, we’ll never dig ourselves out of debt. The President can’t just keep giving money to schools for financial aid if they keep becoming more expensive. He has to encourage them to keep their costs in check.
Ironically, the cost of learning is becoming less expensive (with curriculums and knowledge more accessible and available online) yet colleges keep becoming more expensive. This is because colleges are not spending their money wisely on learning, and instead spend money on facilities so they can obtain “prestige” or good rankings.
It is time to hold colleges and universities accountable for spending the federal money they are given on learning and access to learning. They can’t keep expecting aid from the taxpayers if tuition goes up 8 percent every year. We’ll all go broke!
