SAME JOB, LESS MONEY

SAME JOB, LESS MONEY

The Facts

A new study found that “the average inflation-adjusted hourly wage for male college graduates aged 23 to 29 dropped 11% over the past decade to $21.68 in 2011. For female college graduates of the same age, the average wage is down 7.6% to $18.80.”

Why We Should Care

Even when we find jobs, we are getting paid less than in previous years. More importantly, this is likely to have a long-term impact. Research shows that when a young employee’s wages drop during a recession, they are likely to stay relatively low for decades.

OUR TIME Position

If our generation’s unemployment stays high and our wages continue to drop, it is more difficult for us to pay off our personal debt meaning we have less money to give back to the country in taxes for investments in education, infrastructure, research, etc. – which is bad for all Americans.
