The root of the student-loan problem: Not the fight over rates, but spiking tuition — MSNBC

OurTime co-founder Matthew Segal was on MSNBC on Friday and blasted political dysfunction over student loan interest rates which are set to double on July 1st. 

Instead of focusing solely on short term fixes, however, Segal argued that we should go after the root of the problem: the soaring cost of college. LIKE if you agree.

 

The debate about student loan interest rates is but a small piece of the larger budget puzzle. But with nearly 34% of Americans borrowing money for education, it’s a far-reaching issue that we can’t afford to put another band aid on.

Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel plans to close 50 of the city’s public schools, affecting around 30,000 students in the city’s poorest areas due to budget shortfalls. Mayor Emanuel has also announced a plan to build a new basketball arena with $55 million in taxpayer funds with the argument that it will generate funding for the city.  LIKE if funding should go to public schools over sports programs, REBLOG if you support Mayor Emanuel’s decision. A new article argues that the real scandal with college affordability isn’t student loan interest rates, but the ever-increasing costs that have little to do with the core competency of learning (such as mega gyms, performing arts centers, dining halls with sushi chefs).  LIKE if you agree that colleges are investing their money in the wrong priorities and REBLOG if you disagree. http://bit.ly/Z8v7Mk

Elizabeth Warren: Give Students Same Loan Rate As Big Banks

BACKGROUND:
Student loan interest rates are set to double from 3.4% to 6.8% on July 1st. Her plan, however, will let students borrow money at the same rate the federal reserve gives to big banks— only 0.75%!

WASHINGTON — Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) unveiled her first bill Wednesday, designed to set student loan interest rates at the same level the Federal Reserve offers to big banks. With some student loan rates set to double on July 1 — from 3.4 percent to 6.8 percent — Warren’s bill would reduce student loan interest rates to 0.75 percent, opening the Fed’s discount window to students.
