Fiscal Cliff Update: The Senate has passed a bi-partisan agreement and it is now awaiting a vote in the House of Representatives. The bill includes a renewal of Bush era tax cuts for Americans making less than $400,000, and an extension for 2 million Americans on unemployment insurance, however it puts off discussion on the debt ceiling and the sequester for two months. If Congress doesn’t reach an agreement by December 31, the fiscal cliff and nearly 8% automatic spending cuts will impact our entire generation. We could not only see cuts to education funding and federal student aid, such as Pell Grants, but also, cuts to workforce training programs, AmeriCorps, and an increase in taxes to the middle class who are already struggling with student loan debt. In a rare moment of bipartisanship, US Senators and Representatives are uniting to help curb tuition by proposing a series of measures to make colleges more transparent. These measures include requiring colleges to standardize financial aid letters and disclose how much debt their average students will incur, as well as chart expected job placement statistics and earnings post- graduation. Ironically, higher education institutions have spent millions of dollars lobbying against these efforts claiming that job placement, earnings, and debt statistics do not portray the value of their overall education.
