THE FACTS 1 in 9 Black Americans have been imprisoned. In places like South Central Los Angeles, 1 in 100 black or brown men will graduate with a Bachelors degree, but 1 in 3 are incarcerated. WHY WE SHOULD CARE A society so focused on punishment fails to invest in the potential of young people to become productive citizens. OUR TIME OPINION We should be trying to help educate young people, not imprison them! As the author notes, “It costs less to send a young student to college, than the money spent sending him to prison.” Education is the greatest equalizer.
