President Obama recently announced his support for the Marketplace Fairness bill which would require online retailers who don’t currently pay sales tax, such as Amazon.com, to pay the same sales tax as brick-and-mortar stores. To reduce our debt solely by raising taxes would take a 64% permanent tax increase. To do so via spending cuts would take cuts in government spending by 40 percent. Fiscal Cliff Update: The Senate has passed a bi-partisan agreement and it is now awaiting a vote in the House of Representatives. The bill includes a renewal of Bush era tax cuts for Americans making less than $400,000, and an extension for 2 million Americans on unemployment insurance, however it puts off discussion on the debt ceiling and the sequester for two months. If Congress doesn’t reach an agreement by December 31, the fiscal cliff and nearly 8% automatic spending cuts will impact our entire generation.
