Youth unemployment has become a worldwide problem, and it’s not one to be taken lightly. Research found that long periods of early unemployment can lead to what economists refer to as “structural dependence problems”. In other words, when young people are unemployed for long periods they are more likely to have employment difficulties for the rest of their work lifetime. Recent psychological research shows unemployment can lead to clinical signs of anxiety and depression. Inability to find work reduces self-confidence and create feelings of isolation. The psychological effects are arguably more damaging than the economic effects.
