BULLYING- A ROADBLOCK TO EDUCATION
The Facts
A recent study from the University of Virginia suggests that when a school has a climate of bullying, it’s not just the targeted kids who suffer — the entire school lags academically. A British scholar found that children who simply witness bullying are more likely to skip school or abuse alcohol. American studies have found that children who are bullied are much more likely to contemplate suicide and to skip school.
Why We Should Care
Bullying is an epidemic in many schools, and bullies often do not realize the consequences of their actions. It’s much more than a cheap laugh to bully someone. And in light of the recent school shooting in Cleveland (in which the offender is noted for being bullying) it can lead to disastrous consequences.
OUR TIME Position
We need to rally as a generation to do more to protect students in the classroom. We applaud Lady Gaga for launching the Born this Way Foundation to help combat bullying by creating a broader dialogue around the issue.
